Most ear training measures. You hear two notes and you name the distance between them.
This is the other thing. You keep a line sounding in your head, and a second line moves against it, and you don't lose yours.
That is what the Composing Hour trains, and it is the part people have never been asked to do.
We'll do it in the session. You won't watch me do it.
The session
We start with a single pitch and no instrument.
You hold it. I take the sound away. You keep it.
Then a second voice enters underneath, and your job does not change.
Here is what the hour covers:
Why naming an interval and holding a line are two different skills, and why the first one does not produce the second.
Getting one pitch to stay put in your head for longer than a second.
Keeping that pitch while something else sounds against it.
A short line, memorized in the session, with a second voice moving over it.
What to practice the next morning, in about fifteen minutes.
One hour will not build this skill.
One hour will show you the work and tell you quickly whether you can start it.
Who it's for
Come if you can already play well and you still cannot hear ahead of yourself.
Come if you passed the aural skills exams and you freeze the moment the instrument is gone.
Come if you are deciding whether the Composing Hour is worth a year of your mornings, and you want to try the actual work first.
Reading music is not required. Neither is an instrument.
This is not the session for interval drills. Flawless Ear Training does that, and it does it better than an hour of me talking.
This is also not a session you can watch. You will be singing under your breath for most of it, so sit somewhere you don't mind doing that.
If you have never trained an ear at all, take the free week of Flawless Ear Training first and come to the next one.
Tuesday 10 November 2026, 10:30 AM Pacific. About seventy-five minutes.
