The Composition Technique Series is based on many years of teaching students the basics of music composition. Each level lasts from 6 months to 1 year depending on the students current level of ability. By the end of the series students obtain a solid foundation in the techniques that are required of any serious composer.

Through very precise daily exercises, students will learn to notate music without an external instrument so that they can compose whenever inspiration strikes. They will develop a practical understanding of the equivalent of an undergraduate program in music theory. Most importantly, students will develop a solid technique which will greatly simplify the task of composing music.
Each level is designed to take approximately 30 to 45 minutes per day.

- Develop a solid understanding of the skills learned in Level 1.
- Identify Major and minor harmonic intervals by ear.
- Identify Chromatic, Major, minor, octatonic, whole tone, and modal scales by ear.
- Develop a theoretical knowledge of major, minor, augmented, and diminished chords.

- Identify Pentatonic scales by ear.
- Identify augmented, and diminished chords by ear.
- Develop a theoretical knowledge of triadic inversions, seventh chords, and cadences.

- Develop a theoretical knowledge of various types of basic modulations.

- Identify seventh chords, cadences, and inversions of the triad by ear.
