Requesting a Commission

A Music Composition can be tailor made to your ensemble. Requesting a Music Composition Commission is a simple process which involves paying a composer to write a new work for an event, recital, performance, or other musical activity. The commissioning process allows a patron to become an active part of the music creation process. Typically, these individuals find a composer whose music they enjoy, and ask them to create a work according to specific guidelines.

The commissions that Kevin Ure has been asked to write have been for specific ensembles. He has always had creative license over the content and style of the work. This is not the most common type of commission as most commissioners have an idea for a composition and work with the composer to realize that idea.

Commissioning music is something that anybody can get involved in. It is just a matter of raising the money and hiring a composer. The range of time it takes for a composer to complete a commission can vary from composer to composer. Kevin usually completes commissions in 3 months or less, but a good rule of thumb is to give the composer 18 – 24 months from the time they actually begin working on the composition.
